Personality:

Obligatory "spoilers for Super Danganronpa 2" note goes here!

Chiaki Nanami is the Ultimate Gamer and at first seems to spend her time more with her nose glued to a handheld system than actually paying attention to what's going on around her. She initially comes across as easily distracted, drifting off in conversation or following up statements with "I guess" and ". . . maybe," lacking a sort of certainty to just about anything she says. When the threat of the students killing one another first arises, Nanami manages to seem relatively calm about all of it. In general, she serves as the quiet, airy voice of reason at first, like she's in her own world half the time.

Though she appears to be a space case half the time, Nanami is one to step up and get her head in the game when things get rough. When it's something she cares very deeply for — be it her beloved Galaga or the lives of her classmates hanging in the balance — she'll wake up and throw all her focus into puzzling through whatever the current situation may be. She has a quiet sort of determination inside of her that rarely manifests. When it does though, she's a quiet force to be reckoned with.

In general, Nanami is one to keep a cool head. It's difficult to make her even mildly perturbed, though she will express her annoyance with a frown, a puff of her cheeks, and a soft but firm admonishment. When another classmate of hers, Komaeda Nagito, is repeatedly disruptive during a trial, Nanami cuts him off with a soft but stern warning, asking him to please knock it off. And he does! (sort of) Later on, another classmate attempts to appeal to her emotions during a trial, asking Nanami why she doesn't believe her and as Nanami puts it, it's not that she doesn't want to believe in her classmates. Rather, it's because she wants to believe in them that she's committed to discovering the truth through the class trials. So of course, when her classmates are convicted of murder during the trials, she's basically the poster child for "I'm not mad, just disappointed."

Nanami seems to have a bit of a disconnect when it comes to interacting with people and feelings, though. She takes her "Ultimate Gamer" status to the extreme, relating most things in life to a different type of game she played at one point or another. Basically, her approach to life is much like how she'd approach a game. To Nanami, games should be fun — she doesn't really care about winning or losing, even though she is operating at another level entirely when it comes to them. She's also just sort of a gamer nerd in general, likening a good meal to a "stat boost" or making allusions to events in other games during casual conversations with people. This puts a bit of a distance between her and other people more often than not.

However, her classmates — particularly Hajime Hinata — manage to get her to inch out of her gamer hole bit by bit. In the process, she reveals that there's a lot of things that she doesn't quite know that she really should at her age, like what "Girl's Day" is or much in general about romance. Animals are a mystery to her as well — she confesses to Hinata at one point that she likes games in part because success or failure is determined by numerical values, whereas animals are entirely unpredictable, and that scares her just a bit. Despite this, Hinata manages to coax her to the ranch where she musters up the courage to pet a cow.

Of course, the cow thing makes a lot more sense when you realize that Nanami is actually an AI.

So here's the thing that Hinata and the others learn not long after Nanami's execution — everything that had happened on the island really happened in a virtual world, and Nanami was actually just a virtual observer, created to help guide the rest of her classmates through the program and hopefully rehabilitate them in the real world. What this means is, this particular Nanami that we've been talking about is an AI. However, because she was created by the Ultimate Programmer, Chihiro Fujisaki, she is an extremely savvy AI with a genuine personality of her own. Through her interactions with the rest of the 77th class in the simulation, Nanami has grown and become her own person. It wasn't just her directive to guide them through. She genuinely wanted to see them all "make it off the island" — that is, break free of their despair.

As a note! This Nanami is completely different from the Nanami that appears in Danganronpa 3. She is an AI version who grew into her own "being" throughout the course of SDR2. The real Nanami seems more in touch with reality (for obvious reasons) while AI Nanami often frames things like a video game. While the real Nanami was the class representative and highly knowledgeable about a number of things, as a young AI, this Nanami doesn't know nearly as much about the world around her. She knows a lot about technology, of course, but things like where milk comes from or what romance is really like are still beyond her. Her speech patterns are a bit more drawn out; she's more likely to drift off in the middle of a sentence than her real counterpart, and her vocal patterns are unique to her.

Abilities: Nanami is the "Ultimate Gamer," which basically means she's crazy good at (almost) any video game, with the exception being dating sims — and with those it's less that she's not "good" at them and more that she's not comfortable with them. tl;dr it's not her bag.

Alignment: Sosyne. Nanami in SDR2 is the textbook definition of "chill" and even when she's mourning her classmates, there's always this aura of calmness exuding from her. Even when she's unhappy — at the murders, at her classmates dicking around, whatever — it's still sort of this quiet annoyance that's exuded by her puffing out her cheeks and calling them out in an even tone.

Other: n/a!
